All this and more awaits you as you experience the many medieval treasures of Europe. Let wine and song carry you along the melodious Danube—muse for musicians, artists and poets for centuries. Explore Prague, Vienna and Budapest, magnificent capital cities with storybook architecture and the tales to match. Visit Salzburg, the setting for the beloved film classic, "The Sound of Music," complete with a stop in Mondsee, home of the famed Basilica St. Michael where the movie’s wedding scene was filmed. Indulge in the flavors of the region, from delicate, apricot-scented wines of Austria’s Wachau Valley to the hearty Bavarian beer at a traditional Bavarian Oktoberfest in Vilshofen. Each bend and twist in the river affords new surprises just waiting for you to discover.

Choose AmaWaterways if you want cabins for singles or families.

On some days, guests have a choice of excursions to different towns in different countries, so it’s best to do a little research before making your selection—you often will only have time for one, as they’re usually a bus ride away. AmaWaterways has 25 ships offering river cruises to Europe, Vietnam, Myanmar (Burma) and Africa. The ships that sail in Europe are similarly designed and can accommodate about 164 passengers. Like Viking's Longships, most of AmaWaterways' European ships are 443 feet long, the maximum length to make it through the lock systems on Rhine and Danube cruises.

Where does AmaWaterways AmaPrima sail from?

Savor the many flavors of Germany with a chance to sample the world-famous wines of the Rheingau, the hearty smoked beer of Bamberg and Rüdesheim’s famed coffee. All along the way, gain an intimate understanding of the history and culture of the places you visit. Boats in the AmaWaterways fleet also offer bikes, which can be used in port as part of an excursion or for solo exploration. AmaWaterways also has a partnership with Backroads, an active touring company.

Savor the storybook atmosphere of some of Europe’s most charming towns, Wertheim and Rüdesheim; and along the way, get swept up in the many treasures just waiting to be discovered along the Rhine and Main rivers. Walk through thousands of years of history in the medieval towns of Rothenburg, Bamberg and Miltenberg. Revel in the architectural gems on display—the Würzburg Residenz and Mannheim Baroque Palace. Indulge your inner child with visits to Siegfried’s Mechanical Musical Instrument Museum and the Speyer Technical Museum. Discover the Alsatian capital of France, Strasbourg and savor local flavors like rich Rüdesheimer coffee and hearty Bamberg smoked beer.

In the case of AmaWaterways, and the AmaSiena in particular, bike tours are a highlight. However, there’s always plenty of flexibility while in port for adventures, from wine tastings to museum visits. Both cruise lines take the same approach to dining, with a combination of buffet and off-the-menu ordering at breakfast and lunch, then a sit-down dinner at a set time each night. Seating on both lines is open, meaning passengers can sit wherever they'd like.

AMAwaterways-APT River Cruises

On February 11th, 2024, AmaWaterways’ flagship AmaMagna sets sail along the Danube from Budapest Hungary to Vilshofen Germany. Signiture events are offered in Durnstein (an apricot brandy and chocolate tasting) Spitz Austria (wine festival). AmaWaterways' African cruise-and-safari program (2012-introduced) is based on Chobe River voyages (in Botswana), with travel options to Kenya, South Africa, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe. Unlike other itineraries, it focuses on exotic wildlife with game viewing, fishing excursions, visits to local villages. Experience timeless holiday traditions and elegant pageantry in four countries—Hungary, Slovakia, Austria and Germany. Let iconic capital cities — Budapest and Vienna — decked in holiday finery with glittering Christmas trees illuminated by thousands of lights, bells pealing from cathedral towers and children dressed as angels singing Christmas carols, dazzle you.

Dining on AmaWaterways & Viking River Cruises' Dining Draw Similarities

These cabins are practically identical to the previous category, although they provide slightly more space at 235 square feet. These 210-square-foot cabins offer guests AmaSiena’s signature double balconies; one true balcony with two chairs and a small table and a French balcony right beside it. AmaSiena has 78 staterooms across nine room types, each of which can have the bed configured as a queen or two twins. They’re all exterior cabins decorated in the ship’s signature red-and-gray color palette, equipped with hairdryers, safes, telephones, TVs, complimentary Wi-Fi, a desk and chair, and a (somewhat cramped) en-suite bathroom with a shower. Here’s what else you can expect from each room, from least expensive to most. AmaWaterways boats feature small (one-room) spas, where moderately priced massages are offered, and salons along with fitness centers, which are moderately used.

EUROPEAN WINE REGIONS

Discover the land of pharaohs and pyramids on a Nile River cruise and land adventure through Egypt. Touch history in Austria, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria and Romania, as you sail along the exotic lower Danube.

Viking also has six smaller "Baby Longships," which sail the Douro River in Portugal and the Elbe River in France, which runs through Germany and the Czech Republic. Then, there are the ships in Egypt and China, Vietnam, which the line either owns or charters. All told, the fleet stands at 70 (excluding ships currently not operating in Russia). Trying to decide whether you want to sail AmaWaterways vs. Viking River Cruises is tricky. After all, both look pretty similar from the outside, both cater (and market) to North American passengers and both sail on virtually all of the world's major rivers -- they even include many of the same ports. Let us help you learn more so you can choose between these two river cruise lines.

(On Avalon, this space is an enclosed glass lounge.) The Chef's Table on Ama has a set multicourse menu with wine pairings that you're allowed to book for free once per cruise. AmaMagna offers some of the largest suites on the rivers, including six 474-square-foot Grand Suites and one massive 710 square foot Owner’s Suite. With fewer passengers on board, guests can enjoy the luxury of space — our public areas, like lounges and restaurants, are never overcrowded. Both ships are privately-owned and operated under charter, including by other major European lines, like Avalon, Viking, Uniworld.

They also have heated swimming pools with swimup bars that are surprisingly large for a river line. Even at the lowest level, Viking's cabins include exceptional storage space, with lots of drawers and underbed space for storing suitcases. Cabins also feature great lighting, which employs dimmer switches and bedside controls. Bathrooms have heated floors, a surprising and wonderful detail, especially in the middle of the night. While Ama and Viking's European ships look similar on the outside, their cabin design and decor are quite different.

There’s also the Chef’s Table, a 32-seat specialty restaurant with a panoramic view from the ship's stern that serves a five-course tasting menu. One dinner here per sailing is included for all guests, but you need a reservation. AmaWaterways has carved out a niche for itself in the river cruise arena with its emphasis on wine and food amid comfortably stylish surrounds.
